 Galaxy 5 (i5500 Series)

 

The lowest priced phone here, the Galaxy 5 (i5500 series) may resemble Samsung’s Corby range, but Android opens up more possibilities.

The screen is a 2.8 inch QVGA affair (240 x 320), but it is capacitive. A 600Mhz processor and a 2MP camera round off this amazing value-for-money package.

Mi-300

The Mi-300 has a larger than average a 3.2 inch HVGA (320 x 480) capacitive touchscreen, bringing it on par with devices that cost almost twice as much! You also get a trackball, Wi-Fi , Bluetooth, GPS and a 5MP autofocus camera with LED.

The only catch is that it has Android 1.6, with no clarity or confirmation on when the OS will be upgraded.

 XCD28 Mobile

One of the more recent launches, the XCD28 has a 2.8 inch QVGA touchscreen, Android 2.1 and all the usual trappings, including a micro SD card slot that supports up to 8GB.

What sets the XCD28 apart is Dell’s offering of an ‘Advanced Exchange Warranty’ . In case of a hardware failure, customers will receive a new device instantly.

 Galaxy 3 Mobiles

The Galaxy 3 is unfortunately overshadowed by the phenomenal AMOLED screens of its more expensive cousins. It has a more powerful processor than the norm (667Mhz, compared to the usual 600Mhz) and a heady 256MB RAM, making it the ideal multi-tasker in this segment.

With a WQVGA capacitive screen (240 x 400), it’s not in the same league as the Spice Mi-300 , but screen quality and viewing angles are a tad better. It’s powered by Android 2.1.

 Motorola Quench XT3

Apart from the HVGA (320 x 480) 3.2 inch capacitive screen which is almost the norm at this price, the screen is covered with the ultratough Gorilla Glass, found in premium devices like the Nokia N8, iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

The trackball and MotoBlur UI customisations are welcome additions.

 Videocon Zeus (V7500)

The Videocon Zeus (V7500) is good; both on paper and in hand. But with relatively poor brand recall and a below average run in the mobile segment, it faces an uphill task.

On the upside, it matches the specifications of all the others, includes a HVGA (320 x 480) capacitive screen, 5MP camera and is bundled with a car charger, 8GB micro SD card and two 1230mAh batteries.

LG Optimus One P500

It’s the only device powered by the latest Android 2.2 in this price range (at the time of writing). It’s faster and more responsive, and can be used for internet sharing (as a portable Wi-Fi router). It ticks all the right boxes with a 3.2 inch 320 x 480 capacitive touchscreen and features a larger-tha usual 1500mAh battery.

HTC Wildfire

Among the first few affordable Android phones, Wildfire still holds its own because of fantastic bu quality and the HTC name. Unfortunately, it falls short when compared to the likes of LG Optimus One, Samsung Galaxy 3 and Motorola Quench XT It has a slower 528Mhz processor and only a QVG (240 x 320) screen.

The QVGA resolution couple with the larger 3.2 inch screen size make the edges of fonts and images noticeably blockier.

 Sony Ericsson Xperia X8

The X8 stands out because of Sony Ericsson’s Timescape UI, which covers the standard Android multiple homescreens. Timescape presents all communication essentials like Twitter, Facebook, emails, photos, SMSes together in a 3D interface.

At 3 inches, the X8 has a smaller screen but sticks to the same HVGA (320 x 480) resolution. What pulls it down are Android 1.6, only 168MB RAM and a weak battery.

 Motorola FlipOut

This is the only phone here in this range to feature a capacitive touchscreen and a complete QWERTY keypad. With the keypad closed, you can still use the on-screen keyboard for text entry. It has all the right features, the only downsides being the low resolution (240 x 320) display and a weak battery.
