Anna Chapman: A Russian Spy?

Anna Chapman is a hot Russian spy picked up by the US Department of Justice during a 11 person roundup on Monday, June 28, 2010.  Chapman is a 28 year old divorcee and New York socialite suspected of giving the Russian government information every Wednesday since January 2010..

Anna Chapman, believed to be a 28-year-old divorcee with a masters’ degree in economics and her own online real-estate business, is being held without bail after prosecutors called her a ‘highly trained agent’ and a ‘practised deceiver’. Chapman is believed to have used her high-profile connections to pass American secrets on to a Russian government official.

Chapman reportedly exchanged information via her laptop in various NYC locations including a West Village bookstore and Midtown coffeeshop.  Chapman communicated with her handler through a secret online spy network

Undercover agents posed as Russian officials nabbed Chapman by planning a rendez vous to exchange a phone passport to another female agent.  The undercover agent reportedly asked Chapman: “Are you ready for this step?”  Chapman reportedly responded “Sh**, yes.”  The undercover agent then gave Chapman detailed instructions to carry out the passport exchange and report back to him after the rendez vous.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Farbiarz, speaking Monday in federal court in Manhattan, called the allegations against 10 people living in the Northeast "the tip of the iceberg" of a conspiracy of Russia's intelligence service, the SVR, to collect inside U.S. information, the biggest such bust in recent years.
Each of the 10 was charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. attorney general, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison upon conviction. Two criminal complaints outlining the charges were filed in U.S. District Court in New York.

Police in Cyprus said Tuesday that an 11th defendant, a Canadian citizen wanted by U.S. authorities on suspicion of espionage and money laundering, was arrested in the morning at Larnaca airport while trying to fly to Budapest, Hungary.

Russia angrily denounced the U.S. arrests as an unjustified throwback to the Cold War, and senior lawmakers said some in the U.S. government may be trying to undercut President Barack Obama's warming relations with Moscow.
