In the climactic final gunbattle, special forces troops killed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran as he tried to flee the war zone in an ambulance early on Monday, state television reported.
LTTE intelligence chief Pottu Amman and Soosai, head of the ‘Sea Tiger’ naval wing, were also believed killed, the report said.
Prabhakaran founded the LTTE on a culture of suicide before surrender, and had sworn he would never be taken alive.

Veteran Bollywood filmmaker Prakash Mehra died here Sunday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 69.
Mehra died of pneumonia and multiple organ failure at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, said family sources.
Mehra ventured into filmmaking with 1968 Shashi Kapoor starrrer “Haseena Maan Jayegi” followed by the 1971 hit “Mela”, which had Feroz Khan and Sanjay Khan in lead roles. However, it was Amitabh Bachchan starrer blockbuster hit “Zanjeer” (1973) that not only catapulted him into the big league but also gave the Hindi film industry its ‘angry young man’.
He later teamed up with Amitabh in hits like “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”, “Sharabi”, “Laawaris” and “Namak Halal” before their last film together “Jaadugar” that turned out to be a dud.
Recently he was visited by Amitabh while he was in the intensive care unit in the hospital.
Mehra’s health is said to have worsened after his wife’s death. He is survived by two sons - Sumeet and Amit.

Commission (UPSC) announced its result for 2008 on Monday. And as would befit the Capital, 11 of the top 25 candidates either belonged to Delhi and the NCR or they studied in New Delhi.
While topper Shubhra Saxena teaches at an IAS coaching institute in Delhi, Yash Garg, a junior resident at Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi, has stood sixth. The 25-year-old did his Class XII from DPS, RK Puram and then joined Maulana Azad Medical College for his MBBS.
Shubhra Saxena, a graduate from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, and Sharandeep Kaur Brar, post-graduate from Panjab University, were ranked first and second in the civil services (main) examination 2008, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced here. Another woman, Kiran Kaushal was ranked third.
Among the male candidates, physically challenged Varinder Kumar Sharma was ranked first and overall bagged the fourth position.
Shubhra Saxena cleared the exam in her second attempt. Sharma, a bachelor of engineering from Punjab Engineering College , cleared the exam in his first attempt.
