IPL Season 2 Cricket 20-20 Match Outside India
Sports Sunday, March 22, 2009it is finally official that the second season of the Indian Premier League won't be held in India.
The new tournament venue will be known by Monday evening but the likely venues are South Africa or England. England seems to be the frontrunner because it is holding the Twenty20 World Cup a few days after IPL.
The decision to shift the Twenty20 tournament out of the country was taken at the BCCI's emergency Working Committee meeting in Mumbai to take a final call on the cash-rich event which had run into rough weather because of security apprehensions.
There has been a tussle between the government and the board over security issues and after the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Pakistan, some state governments had told the organisers that it may not be possible to provide adequate security for the 45-day tournament whose dates clash with the Lok Sabha polls.
IPL Commissioner and Chairman Lalit Modi, who was also at the press conference, said the number of matches, format and timing of the event will remain unchanged and the organisers would not tinker with the "integrity of the tournament".
